Members, visitors and friends of First Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington will come together in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, to observe the start of the Lenten Season.
Lent begins 40 days prior to Easter and Christ’s resurrection, and it represents the time Jesus Christ spent fasting and praying in the wilderness.
Rev. Elizabeth Parker Horton will mark ashes in the shape of a cross on the foreheads of worshippers, symbolizing humility and repentance. In her message, she will encourage us to reflect on Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and how it relates to our spiritual renewal. Sometimes, worshippers leave the ashes on their foreheads after the service to symbolize that through Christ, all sins are forgiven.
