Sunday’s Sermon: The Edges of Our Faith:In Need of HealingRev. Elizabeth HortonScripture Reading: Amos 7: 7-17 |
A message from Rev. Horton… |
(The photo contains part of a mural at the United Nations Headquarters in New York (outside the Security Council meeting room).Do you know what is a plumb line? If so, you are ahead of the curve for Sunday’s sermon preparation! In our Series, On the Edge of Faith, we will hear the prophet Amos recall his vision of the Lord, who was standing against a wall holding a plumb line. In the world of construction, a plumb line is a weight suspended by a string. It’s used to measure if a wall or structure is crooked or centered, justified or one-sided. The Lord asks Amos, “What do you see?” When Amos answers, he is told that the Lord will place a plumb line among the people. The Lord will reveal what is crooked, what is broken, what is skewed. In the photo above, we see A plumb line stands at the center. As people of faith, it is hard not to connect this with Amos’ vision. What does the plumb line reveal? How does Amos respond? What is our own duty when we have injustice and crookedness revealed to us? When we know of suffering and weakness within the family of God, what is our response? Perhaps God is asking us, What do you see?Do you have a plumb line? If so, please bring it to worship! -Elizabeth |
