A MESSAGE FROM REV. HORTON:
Beloved Community,
Will you join me a county wide Prayer for our Schools on Saturday at 10:00AM on the church lawn of First Presbyterian and First UMC? Rev. Alan Suber, Pastor at Faith Forward Baptist church, has led the effort for clergy and community to come together for the three school systems of Lexington City, Thomasville City and Davidson County. I have been invited to give the Prayer for our Students, and I would love if the congregation of FRUCC could be present.
We begin a sermon series from Job: Keeping the Faith in Troubled Times. The Book of Job is for people who have questions, who struggle and suffer, who may feel as if no one is listening or is even there at all. We won’t find any easy answers, but we will search together.
As we begin worship with Job’s questions, we end the service celebrating World Communion Sunday. A day to remember that in spite of all the differences between denominations and groups of Christians, we turn toward each to remember God’s desire for us to be connected.
Confirmation Starts soon for 9th – 12th graders.
Meet with me for an intro meeting after church this Sunday. Confirmation will be a 20-session exploration of our faith and tradition where NO QUESTION IS OFF LIMITS! Check out the curriculum here: Confirm Not Conform.
Adult Confirmation
We can offer confirmation for adults too. If you are out of high school, never been confirmed in the UCC, or just wanting a refresher course, please let me know.

Neighbors in Need Offering:
Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds of this offering is used by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to UCC churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. We will collect this offering on Sunday, October 3, World Communion Sunday. PASTOR’S PANTRY ANNUAL HOLIDAY MEAL ASSISTANCE
In an effort to help Pastor’s Pantry feed their senior clients for their Annual Holiday Meal, our church will collect 400 cans of green beans by Monday, November 8. Pastor’s Pantry has reached out to the community because this is a special treat outside of the monthly groceries they already receive. Boxes for donations will be outside the church office and in the Narthex. Thank you for you help with this community outreach program!
SUPPORT OUR GIRL SCOUT TROOP
Girl Scouts Troop #2160 is participating in the Annual Nuts and Candies Sale. This sale helps support many of the troop’s activities, including service projects with First Reformed. You can order online or email Jianna Miller at jiannamiller@gmail.com to place an order. Orders can be shipped to you directly or dropped off at church. Jianna can take orders from you until October 17 and online orders for direct shipping can be placed until October 23.
ITEMS AVAILABLE TO ORDER: English Butter Toffee, Deluxe Pecan Clusters, Chocolate Covered Almonds, Sweet and Salty Mix, Peanut Butter Bears…and much more for $6-8
To see the full list of items, please go to bit.ly/jianna2021.
SATURDAY TAKE-OUT LUNCH
We continue to need volunteers to help plate and serve throughout the month. Please think about giving an hour and a half once a month to help serve our community. We have cooks in place for each Saturday, but we could easily use four or more volunteers to help with serving. Contact our church office if you can help us! Thanks to all of those who cook, serve, bring desserts, and help make the lunch program a success!
GET TO KNOW US
The Evangelism Board will host a hybrid “Get to Know Us” event in the fellowship hall bi-monthly, beginning October 17, 2021. The event is an opportunity for visitors and newcomers to have a chance to engage with some of our members.
BOOK STUDY CONTINUES THROUGH SEPTEMBER
Continuing on Tuesdays, join us for our study of “See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love” by Valarie Kaur. We will continue to meet via ZOOM using THIS LINK.

CHARLES ENGLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BACKPACK PROGRAM
Our church continues our partnership with Charles England Elementary School to help it meet the needs of their students for the 2021-22 School Year. They continue to need food for their “BACKPACK PROGRAM.” You may help by making monetary donations by check to First Reformed UCC with CEES in the memo line or you may contribute online at the church’s website.
