Who could have imagined that hundreds of plastic grocery bags filling up recycle bins, or in some cases, garbage cans, could have such a positive impact in keeping our local homeless population protected from the wet ground?
A group of mat weavers at First Reformed UCC had exactly that vision. They meet at the church at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays where they quickly get to work cutting plastic bags into narrow strips that they tie together vertically. Church members continue to save and donate their grocery bags to supply this ministry.
The growing group of weavers thread the long plastic bag strips onto wooden tabletop looms made by church members Jerry Lovell and Doug Sink. It takes five loom-sized woven pieces to make one full-sized, cushiony plastic mat that keeps those who sleep outside warmer and dryer.
