Ashes ‘to Go’ at Noon; Collaborative Ash Wednesday Service in the Evening

Rev. Elizabeth Parker Horton provided approximately 25 Ash Wednesday blessings to go during the noon lunch hour March 1 around the Square in Uptown Lexington. On Ash Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., First Reformed UCC members worshiped alongside the congregation of St. Stephens UMC located just across the Education Building parking lot.

Rev. Horton shared the Ash Wednesday message with Rev. Ellis Carson, pastor of St. Stephen UMC. The loud rain, wind, lighting and hail storm grew stronger as the service began, but the guest choir from Central United Methodist church helped drown out the thunder with powerful music of praise for God’s love.

Thank you to John Gray, who helped read scripture during the service, and to Lee Ann Peele, who accompanied Ellen Peterson on the piano as Ellen sang a touching solo of “Where He Leads Me.” We hope to have more collaborative worship services with St. Stephens UMC, perhaps at our sanctuary.
