The Healing Force Drum Band Sunday, Feb. 19, 2 p.m.

The Healing Force Drum family band will offer a free concert on Sunday, featuring drumming, African music played on handmade instruments, singing and storytelling.

First Reformed UCC is offering the free concert to the public to celebrate Black History Month, with sponsorship by the Maggie and Arthur Thomason Endowment. It will take place in the sanctuary, and a love offering will be received.

The Healing Force specializes music and educational storytelling. They are from Winston-Salem and have been together since 1975. The band’s motto is “Serving the Community Through the Arts.” The band frequently performs at schools and colleges, churches, libraries, festivals and workshops.

The band celebrates all of the ways that people are connected. The performance will feature “The Rhythm of the Drum,” in which band members share African culture in a variety of ways. Joseph and Gail Anderson founded the group, starting out as a duo. Now the family band of four also features Sonji Anderson and Karim Anderson.
